i did this little doodle earlier today. we are poisoning our oceans with plastic. it gets broken apart over time into little bits and eventually becomes little plastic particles that move with the currents all over the earth. this stuff is toxic. the toxicity comes from BPA. we hear about BPA in the news talking about the recall and banning of things like baby bottles with BPA, and drinking bottles because the BPA is cancer causing. fish ingest these particles of plastic and eventually get ingested by humans. we absorb them in so many ways. this is really an issue that can't be fixed. there is no way to filter the ocean. the only thing we can do is use less plastic. and don't think that recycling plastic helps either, because most of the plastic out there can't be recycled, and only about 3 to 4% of plastic that can be recycled actually does (even though people put it in the green bin, trash and recycling companies throw it away anyway) i mean its always good to recycle, i just don't think we can stop there to relieve our guilt. this one is another one of those slow moving disasters. the worst kind. i want to try, in the next few days, figuring out some ways i can use less plastic id love to hear your advice. it seems so unavoidable because everything comes in plastic, but id like to try.
i am not normally a fan of these things, because lets face it, even though i won't buy it, it already exists, therefore the problem still exists, but hey, i feel bad and doing nothing will give me no false satisfaction.
i never like bad endings so heres some hope. they've already invented new types of plastic that are biodegradable, and Wall-mart of all companies is supporting it, and wants it used in all products sold at their stores. Wall-mart, you still suck ass, but thanks.
wow, what a loaded subject. It's so true, plastic is dangerous and it is absolutely everywhere. there is no sense in using it either, because it is only recyclable to a certain point and then it just goes to the landfill like everything else... Glass, however, is endlessly recyclable. It can be used over and over and over again, melted and re-blown. The sad part about what plastic does is that there is no market for glass anymore, so the big companies aren't buying the recycled glass from waste management. What you can do, however, is make it a point to use things that will not be thrown away. For instance, a thermos instead of the disposable coffee cups, taking reusable grocery bags to the store instead of letting yourself get plastic bags from the store, using real silverware and plates instead of disposable ones, using a handkerchief instead of tissues, etc. The best thing to do is just take a step back and look at all that you throw away and then try to switch that out with something you can keep instead. Plastic is terrible, and it gets into your food and is poisonous. This is a fantastic illustration, perfect colors. I almost wonder if the figure should be as gluttonous as our society really is...
p.s. have you heard about the trash island? turns out all of the plastic that has been thrown into the ocean has come together into and island...twice the size of TEXAS. You can see it from space.
this illustration is actually about trash island, and as it turns out it is actually not an island at all. in fact it would be much better if it was because then we could clean it. instead what is out in the middle of the pacific is an area of water densely saturated with small pieces of plastic around the size of confetti and smaller. 7 million tons of it is out there. the scariest part is taht most of the 7 million tons of plastic are broken up so small to the point where they are just particles of plastic that we can't see. so basically microscopic pieces of toxic plastic have polluted the water, and theres no way to filter it. the particles get stuck to everything that swims in the water, absorbed through the skin, and then we catch the animals and eat them, and the particles go into us. it takes such a small amount of plastic to pollute a large amount of water. its like putting sugar in water, even the tiniest amount is noticable when you drink it. eventually all the plastic in the ocean will break apart into particle sized pieces and will most likey kill everthing in the ocean. wouldn;t that suck
it's really terrifying, but even more angering. the ocean was supposed to be sacred, and now we know that we just messed it up like the rest of the planet.
